Broadband
Broadband is the generic term for fast, permanent, digital Internet access. Not only is it now many
times faster than a dial-up account, it doesn't tie up the phone line so you can make and receive calls
normally while you use the Internet. You simply pay a flat monthly fee for an 'always on' connection, so
there's no need to dial in to get online. Just turn on the computer and you're connected!
Broadband speeds are increasing and prices are tumbling. A typical connection that cost over £30 per month
a few years ago, now costs around half as much.
Broadband Solutions
There are 4 main ways to receive Broadband in the UK.
The most common Broadband service is ADSL, providing access via your existing phone line. Internet Service
Providers (ISPs) supply the service - provided that your phone line is connected to a digital exchange (if
you live in a rural area your exchange may not yet be a digital one).
Wireless Broadband (or Wi-Fi as it is popularly known) is supplied using radio waves. There are a growing
number of companies licensed by the UK Government to provide a Broadband service using an approved
radio frequency. In addition, you can create your own small-scale wireless network in your home or office
enabling you to share your Internet connection between PCs - great for working in the garden or keeping
all the family happy!
If you have Cable TV, then you can get Broadband via the Cable provider.
Lastly, there is Broadband via Satellite. It's expensive, slow and normally only used for isolated
locations and communities.
Kendall Internet
We have wide experience in the definition, installation and configuration of Broadband networks - both
for small businesses and homes. Wi-Fi home networks are increasingly popular, as they enable the
sharing of a single Internet connection around the home and to multiple PCs and laptops.
