PC Security
The Internet has brought us a wealth of information available at the click of a mouse. However, it has
also opened up our PCs to a world of hackers, viruses, junk emails, spyware and a host of other threats.
Always-on Broadband Internet connections have only compounded the problem. If you don't protect your PC,
sooner or later it will be 'attacked' and you may end up with a slow computer (at best) or losing highly
confidential and private information to online 'thieves' (at worst).
Firewall
At the very least, your PC should be protected by a 'Firewall' - a piece of software (usually installed
on your PC) that acts as your PC's 'bodyguard'. It queries incoming and outgoing Internet traffic and
prevents attack either from the Internet or from a malicious piece of software already on your PC.
Anti-Virus
eMail is still a very popular way for attackers to spread their malicious software. New eMail viruses
are created every week and travel the world in hours. Without an Anti-Virus program, your PC is prone
to infection via eMail - and emails you send may then transmit the virus to your contacts.
Anti-SPAM
Junk eMail is the bane of the Internet. Many of us receive SPAM on a daily basis, resulting in time
wasted in deleting them (at best) or your PC becoming infected (at worst). However, help is at hand in
the shape of Anti-SPAM software. When used effectively, such software can automatically recognise,
delete and remember such junk eMail - and in some cases, even 'bounce' it back to the sender with a
'not known at this address' reply.
Anti-Spyware
Hackers and viruses have been around a long time, but new types of threats are evolving too. For example,
every time you download web pages, software, video or music, you may also download some malicious code.
Such code can 'spy' on you - noting down which web sites you visit (at best), fill your screen with
pornography or stop your PC from working at all (at worst). If you don't use one or more Anti-Spyware
products then these problems can occur on your PC.
Latest Updates
If you don't keep your PC software up to date then you are more prone to threats. Luckily, Broadband
and Automatic Windows Updates now make it easier to stay fully up to date with patches and fixes. You
should also keep all your security software fully up to date - for example: if you fail to download the
latest Anti-Virus definitions on a regular basis, your scans won't detect new viruses and your PC will
be left unprotected.
Parental Control
Children now use PCs at school and teenagers often use the Internet as a homework resource. However, if
you don't run any Parental Control software on your PC, your children may be prone to viewing some
very nasty and totally inappropriate content. Parental Control software prevents access to thousands of
inappropriate web sites and chat rooms etc., enabling you to manage your children's access to the
Internet.
